Your Dalton Dentist Can Fight Bad Breath

Dentist

When you visit our Dalton dentist office, let us know if you are suffering from bad breath. Many people complain of this problem. The difference is that regular bad breath happens after eating something with a strong odor while severe bad breath is a lingering problem that doesn’t go away by simply brushing your teeth.  The latter is often a sign of an overall health issue.

We recommend that people have their teeth cleaned at least twice a year.  This will help keep your teeth and gums in good health while also reducing bad breath.  Studies have found that bad breath is caused by something within the mouth eighty percent of the time. Often, bad breath is a direct result of what you eat.  However, if you brush and floss your teeth that smell should go away.  People with severe bad breath will continue to smell even after brushing and flossing.

Bacteria and plaque can contribute to your breath being bad.  When bacteria are caught in between your teeth, it can start to create a smell. Regular teeth cleanings are a way for us to remove that bacteria and plaque in order to keep your mouth healthier and your breath fresh.  After your teeth are cleaned, the dentist will give you a thorough examination to determine if tooth decay or gum disease is present.  A sickness inside of your mouth is bound to create an odor.  For example, tooth decay is part of your tooth-rotting.  It is unhealthy and likely to smell.  By treating the condition we can keep you in good oral health and eliminate any odor that it is causing.

Dry mouth is another common condition that can lead to stinky breath.  People with diabetes and other health issues are more at risk for the condition.  People with dry mouth do not produce enough saliva.  Saliva is the body’s way of washing away food particles and bacteria that settle inside of the mouth.  The lack of it will directly lead to bad breath since the inside of the mouth is not moist and becomes stale.  In order to combat this issue, drink plenty of water.  Staying hydrated will help the body produce more saliva and if you drink water throughout the day it will moisten the mouth and freshen your breath.

As a local dentist we want our patients to understand that oral health involves a combination of what you do at home, brushing and flossing, and regular trips to our office.  A good at home routine is essential for fighting off bacteria on a daily basis.  However, it is not enough to remove all of the bacteria and prevent infection. Regular teeth cleanings are required for reducing the risk of cavities, gum disease, bad breath, and other oral health conditions. Partnering with your dentist is the best way to stay in good health.

If you have followed all of these steps and still have persistent bad breath, it may be due to a lingering respiratory infection.  Schedule an appointment with your physician to see if you have anything like an ongoing sinus infection that requires antibiotics in order to treat it.
