You only get one set of natural adult teeth after the baby teeth fall out. Do not assume you will lose these natural teeth as you age. If you take proper care of your natural teeth, they will stand the test of time and possibly even last your entire life. Key in on the four things outlined below to preserve your natural teeth and keep your smile looking fabulous throughout the aging process.
Fluoride is your friend
Fluoride is a mineral that enhances tooth strength. It is naturally found in the water yet even more fluoride is added to the public's tap water to ensure teeth remain robust and sturdy in the years to come. Fluoride consumption is necessary every single day. If some people do not trust the quality of their tap water, then they can choose toothpaste that contains fluoride.
With this type of toothpaste, it is crucial to not rinse out the mouth after brushing the teeth. People need to let the fluoridated toothpaste remain on the teeth throughout the day or night.
Adhere to a consistent oral hygiene regimen
People can keep their natural teeth in elite shape by brushing, flossing and rinsing with mouthwash each day. Brush at least twice per day. Floss a minimum of once each night. If possible, brush and floss the teeth after each meal. When brushing, use a toothbrush with soft bristles. Do not rush through morning and evening teeth cleaning.
When flossing, do not use the same portions of the floss over and over again to clean between the teeth and gums. Using the same sections of the floss will only move bits of food, bacteria and other nasty particles from one portion of the mouth to another. Opt for a mouthwash with fluoride that prevents the accumulation of plaque and the natural teeth will stand that much better of a chance to remain healthy throughout life.
Toss that old toothbrush
Toothbrushes tend to last about three months before they begin to become ineffective. Replace the toothbrush if the bristles are visibly worn or if it is more than six months old. If you have not bought a new toothbrush in years, rush out to the store right now and purchase a new one!
Stop smoking
If you smoke, you are putting your natural teeth in grave danger. Smoking is terrible for oral health as well as overall physical health. Smoking heightens the odds of cancer, tooth decay, gum disease and tooth loss.
Blood in the mouth is cause for concern
If you notice any blood in your mouth when brushing your teeth, visit the dentist or periodontist. The presence of blood is cause for concern. Gums that bleed with consistency can lead to all sorts of issues unless they are treated in a timely manner. Bleeding gums even have the potential to cause diabetes, infections, tooth loss and jawbone loss.
Regular dental visits are essential for natural tooth preservation
Visit the dentist once every six months for a comprehensive examination and full cleaning. Frequent dental appointments give the dentist an opportunity to pinpoint problems with your natural teeth before they spiral out of control and lead to the need for an extraction or another oral health procedure.
