4 Teeth Straightening Options

Types of Braces Dalton, GA

Many choose not to purse teeth straightening out of the belief that metal braces are the only available option. While traditional braces are an established way to fix a range of alignment issues, there are other effective treatment options as well. It is helpful to understand all options to make the most informed decision possible.

Effective options for teeth straightening

There are four methods of teeth straightening that are more common, which include various forms of braces and clear aligners. One may be preferable to another solution depending on the patient’s preference and the severity of the malocclusion. The following is an overview of the four primary methods of teeth straightening

1. Metal braces

Traditional metal braces have generally been the most highly recommended treatment option among dentists. While some adults are concerned with how visible braces are to others, there are some notable benefits to this method. Compared to clear aligners, metal braces are often more effective in treating severe cases of crooked or overcrowded teeth. They are also strong and easier for dental professionals to place than ceramic braces. For younger patients, the inability to remove them is a benefit as it helps ensure effective results.

2. Clear aligners

Clear aligners have become more popular over the past couple of decades, especially among older teenagers and adults who want a more discreet method of straightening their smile. Clear aligners are trays of a transparent plastic material that the patient wears over the teeth. The trays slowly pull the teeth into the ideal alignment, and the patient frequently receives new aligners throughout the process. The patient can also remove them when necessary, which many adults find to be a benefit during treatment.

3. Lingual braces

Fewer people are familiar with lingual braces, but they are not as intimidating as they may seem. Lingual braces are metal braces and work in a similar manner as traditional braces. The difference, however, is that lingual braces attach to the back of teeth, so are less visible in the mouth than traditional appliances that attach to the front of teeth. These braces are effective for treating a variety of issues and can be an option for patients who are not eligible for clear aligners. The drawback is that there may be a longer adjustment period for patients who wear them.

4. Ceramic braces

Ceramic braces, or clear braces, use the same concept as metal braces, attaching to the visible surface of teeth and utilizing brackets and wire. The difference, however, is that the brackets are ceramic and blend in well with natural tooth color. They are a more discreet form of braces, although they may not be able to withstand the same level of pressure as traditional braces.
