Dental Recommended Care and Treatment for a Toothache

Toothache Dalton, GA

A toothache can come in different forms, but it is typically a sign of something that needs to be checked by a dentist. If your tooth or jaw hurts, it is likely that your body is trying to tell you something. Also, the pain can seem to appear out of nowhere, making it challenging to ask for dental help. As a result, everyone should be aware of the care and treatment of tooth pain as recommended by dentists to get significant relief.

Care and treatment for toothaches

If the nerves in the tooth or its roots are irritated, a toothache occurs. Trauma, tooth loss, infection, and decay are all common reasons for a toothache. Pain may also result following a tooth extraction or radiate from other parts of the body, such as the jaw, ear, or sinuses. Patients will need to confirm with the dentist before trying any of the following recommended treatments to prevent interference with their professional treatment.

Toothaches are often accompanied by gum swelling and redness, extreme irritations, and oral cavity inflammation. Anti-inflammatory drugs, such as naproxen, ibuprofen, and other nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), may provide significant relief. Patients need to ensure that they are not allergic to any of these drugs before taking them, and it is advisable to use an NSAID with food to avoid stomach discomfort.

Acetaminophen is an over-the-counter pain reliever that is commonly prescribed by dentists after dental procedures and can be helpful for dealing with toothaches. The analgesic effects of acetaminophen, as well as its effects on the body’s pain reception, makes the ache much more bearable for patients.

Topical medication

Patients can get immediate relief from a toothache by applying drugs like benzocaine directly to the tooth. Benzocaine has been clinically proven to provide pain and discomfort relief. The dentist might recommend Colgate Orabase with 20% benzocaine.

No hard foods

Broken teeth or dental cavities can also cause toothaches, so patients should note the appropriate precautions before determining pain’s origin. Since the weak teeth are more vulnerable to damage, avoid hard foods, especially around the affected region, and eat only soft foods before visiting the dentist.

Ice compress

Since the cold has numbing effects, placing an ice pack on the cheek over the affected region may be soothing. Intermittently apply the ice pack, with intervals of about 15 minutes.

Proper dental hygiene

Even with tooth pain, it is necessary to maintain good oral hygiene. If it is uncomfortable to brush and floss, patients can clean their teeth with a dental wash. The mouthwash’s antibacterial activity will prevent bacteria from worsening the pain and interfering with the healing process.

To sum it up

It is not always possible to receive prompt dental care. Furthermore, although these suggestions may offer relief, they should not be an excuse to avoid a dental appointment. Only a dentist can diagnose and treat tooth pain effectively.
