Reasons You May Have Bad Breath

Everyone has bad breath every now and then.  Also known as halitosis, bad breath becomes a problem when it is consistent.  If you are plagued by bad breath, part of solving the problem is determining what caused it in the first place.

Here is a look at why bad breath occurs and what you can do to remedy the problem.

Most Bad Breath is Caused by an Oral Source

The majority of bad breath stems from an oral source.  As an example, gum disease and cavities can cause bad breath.  Food bits trapped in tonsils can also lead to halitosis. Even dirty dentures and cracked fillings can lead to bad breath.

Medical Conditions Can Cause Bad Breath

A number of different internal medical conditions have the potential to spur bad breath.  Problems with the liver can lead to bad breath. Diabetes, respiratory tract infections and bronchitis can also cause halitosis.  Be sure to visit with your doctor to determine if you are suffering from any of these issues. You might have a perfectly clean and beautiful mouth and terrible-smelling breath simply because of an undiagnosed medical condition of which you are completely unaware.

Failure to Brush and Floss

Poor oral hygiene will eventually lead to bad breath.  Be sure to brush and floss at least twice per day. If possible, clean your teeth after each meal.  A thorough cleaning of the mouth will decrease the bacteria that causes odor. Consider switching to an electric toothbrush with a timer to ensure you clean your teeth for the appropriate amount of time.  This high-tech brush moves in a uniform motion that assists in the efficient removal of plaque and subsequently freshens breath.

Failing to use Mouth Rinse

Mouth rinses freshen the breath and prevent cavities.  Mouth rinses even decrease the bacteria that causes plaque, bad breath and other oral health issues.  Opt for an antibacterial or antiseptic mouth rinse to kill as much bacteria as possible. Fewer bacteria means less of a chance for cavities and other oral health issues that cause bad breath.

Food is a Common Cause of Bad Breath

The food you eat plays a major role in the odor (or lack thereof) of your breath. Food is digested, absorbed into the bloodstream and expelled by the lungs during the breathing process.  Opt for healthy and balanced meals and your breath will smell that much better. As an example, snack on raw carrots, apples and celery instead of spicy chips and other odorous foods that sabotage the quality of your breath.

Lack of Hydration Can Cause Smelly Breath

Consuming water will hasten the cleaning of harmful bacteria and gunk between your chompers.  However, you should not consume sugary drinks as they will only worsen your oral health. So do not assume you have no means of cleaning your mouth and freshening your breath simply because you do not have a toothbrush, toothpaste and floss.  Stay hydrated and you will be that much more likely to avoid halitosis.
