Why Tooth Health is so Important

Posted on: December 16, 2018

Tooth health is crucial for maintaining good health overall. Without proper hygiene, our teeth and the supporting structures of our teeth become exposed to great risks.

By understanding the importance of tooth health, you can properly promote good oral hygiene.

Importance of tooth health

Our teeth are much more than a cosmetic component and a helpful tool while eating. Without healthy teeth, our overall health is put into jeopardy.

The following is everything to know about the importance of tooth health. This includes the risks of poor tooth health and how to keep teeth healthy.

Why tooth health is important

Perhaps one of the more obvious reasons it is important to ensure tooth health is it helps to keep our smile looking great. This has a positive effect on self-esteem and the way others view us in social and work situations.

However, tooth health also goes hand in hand with good oral health overall. By putting into place measures to keep teeth healthy, individuals can ensure their gums and other supporting structures of teeth stay in good overall health as well.

On an even larger note, good oral health helps promote good health overall. This means the risk of developing an infection is lower. Simply put, the healthier our teeth are, the better we look, feel and are able to function on a daily basis.

Risks of poor tooth health

While there are benefits of practicing good oral hygiene, there are also risks of not practicing good oral hygiene. Therefore, not only is good tooth health encouraged, but it is instead required for good overall health.

When an individual has poor tooth health, they have a greater chance of developing an oral infection, suffering from periodontitis and developing cavities. All three of the aforementioned risks of poor tooth health can lead to expensive dental procedures being needed. Or even worse, tooth loss can occur if the issues are ignored for too long.

In order to minimize the risks associated with poor tooth health – including expensive dental procedures and tooth loss – practice good oral hygiene by implementing the techniques seen below.

How to practice good tooth health

The key to practicing good tooth health is to stay consistent with a daily care routine. There are certain aspects and practices that should be implemented into a daily care routine for good tooth health, including:

  • Brushing twice a day
  • Flossing and using mouthwash
  • Daily fluoride treatment
  • Visit the dentist regularly

First and foremost it is important to brush at least twice a day in order to remove harmful bacteria that can gather on the surface of teeth. Also, it is important to floss and use mouthwash at least once a day in order to remove food particles and other substances that cannot be reached by brushing. Be sure to choose a fluoride-based toothpaste and mouthwash to help strengthen enamel.

It is also important to visit the dentist regularly to ensure teeth remain strong and cavities do not form as a result of weakened enamel.
