Will Sore Gums Go Away On its Own?
Sore gums can be irritating and painful for a person that is experiencing them. The gums are extremely sensitive and people don’t realize how important they actually are to a person’s overall oral health. Typically sore gums will go away with time, but if additional symptoms do appear, then it may be best to consult with a dentist.
Knowing what the best ways are to relieve the gums of discomfort can be extremely beneficial.
Today, we will go over and address how the gums work, why they might be sore, and the best ways to relieve them of any discomfort or soreness. Typically, a dentist appointment would be the best option, but sometimes it is not required.
Sore gums
Sore gums are often an indication of a bigger problem, but if the soreness doesn’t last more than a few days then it may just be a reaction to hormonal changes or something as simple as a canker sore.
If a person is only experiencing pain in the gums then it may end up going away on its own in a few days. However, if there are other symptoms that come along with the soreness then it might be an indication that there is something bigger going on. If the gums are also bleeding or swollen then a person may be experiencing gum disease. Other things to be aware of would be a pain when chewing or loose teeth — these can both indicate that the gums are unhealthy and that a disease is forming. If any of these symptoms do appear, it’s best that a person visits the dentist so that they can formally address what the issues might be.
What to do
If the soreness in the gums is distracting or too uncomfortable, there are a few things that a person can do to relieve themselves of some of the discomforts. Below, we go over the best ways to relieve soreness in the gums:
Saltwater rinse
A warm water and salt mixture can help soothe a lot of pain for a person orally. Mix a small amount of salt and warm water to rinse the mouth of any germs, bacteria, or leftover food particles. The rinse will cleanse the mouth and the soreness.
Over-the-counter pain medicines
Pain medications that treat inflammation will help relieve the person of some of the pains that they are experiencing. Over-the-counter medications like ibuprofen or Tylenol can help with the discomfort.
Soft brush heads
Using a softer bristled toothbrush when the gums are sore will ensure that the person won’t cause any further pain to the gums. The softer bristles will provide a more comfortable cleaning.
Sore gums can be irritating for many reasons, whether it be when eating or just simply cleaning the teeth. Sometimes the gums react to other problems within the body causing discomfort. In these cases, the soreness may go away on its own. However, if further symptoms occur and the person continues to experience discomfort, then it may be best to visit the dentist.
